Just two weeks to the start of the New Season at NDPS...

With just two weeks to go before the new season opens at Norwich and District Photographic Society all the final preparations are well advanced and we are working hard to ensure everything goes to plan.

Our programme has contained many superb presentations in the past 12 months during which time our membership has continued to grow, and our regular meetings and Special Interest Group meetings have all been well supported.  Hopefully this season will be even better with many great highlights throughout the season and a number of important new initiatives being introduced.

Here is a summary of the main activities during the first month:

The new season begins on Tuesday 3rd September when the doors will open early at 6pm so members can pay their annual subscriptions before the meeting starts.

For the past few years we have tried to kick off the Season with a particularly good presentation and this year is no exception.  Tonight, we welcome the renowned  photographer, journalist and photographic equipment expert, speaker, judge and educator Damien Demolder to present ‘Street Photography - Light and Life on the Streets’.  In this heavily illustrated talk Damien will explain his approach to street photography, and how he uses light and exposure to grab the attention of the viewer.   Damien says the talk is instructive as well as fun, and you will come away with new concepts to think about and a new way of looking at street photography..

On Tuesday 10th September members of the Society will gather for the official opening and private viewing of the 103rd Annual Exhibition in the Hostry at Norwich Cathedral.

The exhibition is open to the public daily from Wednesday 11th through until Wednesday 25th September. Admission is free.

The annual exhibition is always the highlight of our photographic year and represents some of the best work our members have produced over the past 12 months.  Also displayed in the exhibition are the three prints from the photographers who won this year’s Open Public Competition.  For the first time this year we also included a ‘junior category’ to the Open Competition and the winning entry from 12 year old Jacob Lawes will also be on show.

On Saturday 14th September the Society is hosting  Canon Ambassador and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, David Noton when he brings his inspirational ‘Chasing the Light Roadshow’ to Norwich.

David’s presentation takes place at the Thomas Paine Lecture Theatre at the UEA with the doors opening at 7pm.  This is an all ticket event and again tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite using the following link:

Chasing the Light Roadshow 2019 is no ordinary talk on photography. The audience will join David Noton on a journey around the world. Sharing in his experiences behind the lens in a diverse range of situations and environments, he will take the audience on a two-hour trip of a lifetime. The show combines his stunning high definition pictures, with satellite imagery, music, video clips, anecdotes and humour that cover his 30 years of globetrotting photography.

Not to be missed - the 2019 show is full of new photographs from recent shoots and trips around the world, many of which have not been shown before. BBC Wildlife magazine said David’s images were “a collection of jaw-dropping beautiful views of some of the most spectacular places on earth”.

On Sunday 22nd September the first Landscape Group shoot of the new season is planned to take place at Sea Palling.

The beach at Sea Palling is typical of many in Norfolk with attractive dune fringes all along the large expansive stretch of golden sand.  However, the unusual rook reefs and the lagoons that have formed along the beach add the additional attraction that photographers seek.  The best views are generally looking along the beach towards the north where the sand has formed curved lagoons (although from time to time particularly during high tides these can shift).

The first competition evening of the year takes place on Tuesday 24th September.  The theme for the opening round of POTY is an Open theme – just let us see your best shots and has been chosen specifically to give new members of the Society the maximum opportunity to score well…!

This is a Digital Round and images must be submitted no later than midnight on Tuesday 17th September in accordance with the competition rules which can be downloaded from the ‘Members’ area’ of the website.

Finally, at the end of the month, on Saturday 28th September we hold our traditional New Member’s Day.  Gather at the Medodist Hall, Chapel Field Road, NR2 1SD to learn all about the Society and and bring your camera for a photo-shoot out and about the City of Norwich.

Member’s Day is an ideal opportunity for both new members and anyone who is thinking about joining the Society to meet members of the Committee informally and to learn more about NDPS.
