Theme - POWERFUL BLACK AND WHITE

Shapes, Line, Texture and Colour are the main elements in a photograph with impact. When Colour is removed one or more other elements will need to be strong to hold the viewer’s attention.  So, by creating an impactful B&W you’ll improve your abilities to emphasise these other elements of a photograph. And to identify ways to grab attention and create mood without colour.  In addition, perhaps you’ll learn how different B&W conversion methods can affect tonal relationships.

For this round, choose your own subject and composition emphasising shapes, lines and/or texture to create a powerful B&W photograph.  But remember, no colour, no selective colour (such as ‘colour-popping’, for example, a red coloured rose in a B&W background), no monochromatic tints (such as sepia), no duotones, or other forms of colour grading.

PLEASE NOTE – To remove doubt and provide clarity infrared photography is allowed in this round provided the conversion to black and white complies with the guidelines above.

About POTY

The Norwich & District Photographic Society (NDPS) prides itself on being a friendly group of people all with a common interest in capturing and creating photographic images.  NDPS’s overall aim is that with the support of the more experienced photographers within the Society all members can become the best photographer they can be.

NDPS holds regular competitions throughout the year to give members an opportunity to put their skills into practice, and these are a great way to improve and get feedback on their own photography.

Currently the ‘Photographer of the Year’ (POTY) is the most prestigious competition that NDPS members can enter.

Members entering POTY are expected to have read and be familiar with the document NDPS GENERAL COMPETITION RULES & CONDITIONS OF ENTRY which also apply unless stated otherwise in this document.

POTY Structure

The POTY competition consists of TWO (2) parts.

In the first part of the competition there are FIVE (5) qualification rounds with members competing in TWO (2) leagues

In the second part of the competition the THREE (3) photographers in each league with the highest score at the end of the qualification rounds will compete in the ‘Final’ round to be elected the ‘Photographer of the Year’ in a ballot of the members of the Society.
