Landscape Group shoot - Brancaster Staithe

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society Harbour Way, Brancaster Staithe PE31 8BW United Kingdom (map)

With sunny intervals and a light breeze expected on the North Norfolk Coast for the three days preceding the forthcoming weekend it has been decided to meet at Brancaster Staithe at 6:15pm on Saturday 28th May

Meet in the car park at the end of Harbour Way to the right of the cottages in front of the Sailing Club

Sunset is at approximately 9:00PM when mid tide conditions are forecast

What to shoot:

The main channel, Mow Creek, a broad expanse of water which spreads out into numerous smaller creeks busy with yachts. Around the quay there are usually fishing boats and the surrounding area is packed with interesting details such as piles of lobster pots and other fishing gear. Switching to a longer lens here offers the chance to look for more intimate images.
Finally, there is often good images to be captured around the entrance of the Staithe where there is an old cottage and reed beds along the far side of the creek that are lit by light from the setting sun.

Please note:
The details for Landscape Group shoots are normally confirmed a few days before each shoot after considering expected weather conditions at the location on the day of the shoot.

About the NDPS Landscape Group

The Landscape Group’s objectives are simple – to encourage members who wish to take part improve their landscape photography, enhance their understanding of the equipment and techniques available. Learn through collaboration with fellow members and have fun.
Landscape is one of the oldest art forms with many famous landscape painters such as John Constable, Jacob van Ruisdael and J M W Turner. Since the invention of the camera landscape photography has become one of the most prolific forms of photography, reaching critical acclaim in the hands of photographers like Ansel Adams and Joe Cornish to name but two.
Latterly techniques such as intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple exposures have enabled photographers to come closer to the ephemeral images painted by Turner in his later period and the use of perspective control or tilt/shift lenses has allowed digital photographers to emulate the depth of focus and perspective control long achieved using traditional large format cameras. The use and understanding of filtration is another area in landscape photography that has advanced considerably in the last twenty years and nowadays it is unusual not to find a set of neutral density and graduated filters taking up valuable space in the landscape photographer’s bag.
Since it began in 2016 the landscape group has developed range of activities support members of the Society in developing their skills in creating landscape imagery, whether this is with a traditional or more contemporary approach.

Currently, we meet monthly at one of East Anglia’s many picturesque locations. Each shoot is a relaxed, friendly and informal way to improve your landscape photography as part of a small group of about ten (10) photographers. The shoots normally start either early morning (September to March) or later in the day (April to June) and generally end with a beer or coffee over which we can discuss the outcomes and plan future events.
Keep an eye on the website for choice of location and meeting times which will be chosen in the week ahead of the shoot, so we can take account of expected weather conditions. In the longer-term it is planned to extend the activities to include:

  • Regular field trips to locations beyond Norfolk

  • Workshops on a variety of landscape related topics – last season local landscape photographer came along to one of our shoots and provided members with guidance and some great tips...!

  • Facility for sharing and critiquing members’ work

  • Advice for members who wish to achieve distinctions for their work

Please remember, our group can only be as good as the input made by its members so if you are willing to organise or lead any kind of event that you think will be of interest to members, please step forward. Please don’t be shy – all offers of help will be greatly appreciated…!
