Initially trained as a press photographer, Stewart Wall later pursued academic studies and obtained both a degree and an MA. His academic pursuits led him to develop a keen interest in sociology, which he now employs in conjunction with photography to explore and investigate various aspects of social life, social change, and the underlying societal factors influencing human behaviour.

At present, Stewart’s research endeavours involve two distinct projects. The first of these projects centres on examining the transformative impact of online shopping and novel human trends on our traditional approaches to engaging with high streets. The second project is concerned with investigating the repercussions of coastal erosion on the eastern coastline of England, spanning from Norfolk to Yorkshire.

Stewart has been creating Photobooks for over 20 years and loves the idea that a photobook ensures people can see his images and stories both now and in the future. His photobooks are in private collections all over the world, as well as in the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol.

In 2015 Stewart established Future Heritage Photobooks as a publishing house and began to run collaborative photobook projects, many of which were in conjunction with the Royal Photographic Society. In 2020 the RPS asked him to create the criteria for a new distinction genre in photobooks, which he did, and then he chaired the assessments for its first two years. In 2021 the RPS awarded Stewart their Fenton medal and made him a life member for my contributions to the Society. He has also mentored photographers who have gone on to gain their associate and fellowship in photobooks with the society.
