Landscape Group Shoot - Blakeney on the North Norfolk Coast

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society The Quay, Blakeney, NR25 7NE United Kingdom (map)

This month’s Landscape Group shoot sees us making an early start at Blakeney which is the quintessential North Norfolk coastal village, with narrow streets slopping down to the tiny picturesque harbour. Each year we hold a summer shoot inon a Summer evening here but this will be the first time we have visited Blakeney for a morning shoot.

The is a above average high tide about an hour and a half before sunrise so there should be water bythe quayside and the surrounding creeks.

Although Blakeney offers many opportunities to capture great images there are two classic viewpoints that photographers tend to favour. First there is the quay that is lined with stout wooden posts and is usually crammed with small boats. The quay starts at the car park and runs past the Blakeney Hotel around the river to the west, where there is a slipway. Past the slipway you can also take the footpath out onto the salt marsh.
The other viewpoint is the marsh which is reached by leaving the car park over a wooden bridge and along the river past the yachts that are either reflected in the calm water or jutting out of the mud at different angles. .

Meet in the car park at the end of the Quay in good time to set off by 5:30am. But if the water is still high you may prefer to park higher on the approach road and walk down to the quay where we shall all meet.

About the North Norfolk Coast

The location will be decided in the two weeks leading up to the shoot so we can select the best location based upon the tide times and the expected weather conditions. The Norfolk Coast is incredibly varied, with a real mixture of sandy beaches, salt marshes, colourful cliffs, wonderful fishing harbours and stunning sand dunes. Throw in a few Victorian piers and a few lighthouses for good measure and there is certainly no shortage of places to photograph. In particular the stretch from Old Hunstanton through to Cromer also offers the opportunity to get get sunset images at this time of year if the weather conditions are favourable.

Another feature of the North Norfolk Coast in August is the opportunity to photograph sea lavender in bloom. Its principal distribution is in the saltmarshes of the north coast from Holme to Cley.
