Special Presentation - The Photography of David Morris

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Dave Morris is a highly-skilled, innovative photographer who lives in Cromer. His work is exhibited in many widely-respected national and international galleries. He trained in Graphic Design at Hull College of Art in the early seventies. Morris confesses that the course was alright but his time there seemed to be more about drinking and parties than serious learning. He eventually graduated knowing more about photography than Graphic Design.

After a working life comprising jobs in Art Direction and Creative Advertising, he concentrated on developing his inherent flair for photographic expression. His work is an eclectic mix of styles ranging from monochromes to infrared; portraits to street photographs, and fantasy to the pure and heavily manipulated image.

Dave Morris has photographed Artisans in the Cotswolds; The Crab Fishermen of Cromer, idiosyncratic human life in the bars of European cities; The Hippodrome Circus, Dancers on Cromer beach, the Household Cavalry and latterly a series of portraits in Churches for a project on Spirituality.

Join Dave Morris to hear of his forays into photography, which he defines as subject matter he’s firstly attracted to and then whether he can make any money out of it…!

Special Presentation - The Green Road between Two Woods - the photography of Andrew Rafferty

Special Presentation - The Green Road between Two Woods - the photography of Andrew Rafferty

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Andrew Rafferty is a critically acclaimed photographer with an unconventional approach that includes images printed on rock fragments and displayed in a museum case, and a uniquely personal depiction of the Passion of Christ using images of himself printed on cloth. His work is rooted in photographic and lens based techniques and includes video and computer manipulation as well as some more obscure ways to make images. Much of it is a response to the presence of the human in the landscape (regardless as to whether humans are portrayed). His published book The Stones Remain on megalithic sites of Britain was such a case in point, with not a single human depicted, and yet it was about man's lasting legacy in the landscape. By making photographic works on paper and stone and cloth, his photography conveys the presence of people through marks and landmarks.

Tonight, his presentation primarily features a photographic journey he undertook to accompany a sequence of poems by Kevin Crossley-Holland about Seahenge. Discovered in 1998 on the foreshore near Holme in North Norfolk, it caused great excitement. It was a circle of 55 split oak trunks with a huge upside down oak stump at its centre. What was it for? A place where body and spirit meet? A mortuary? A site for skyburials? Andrew’s response to these questions brought him to a different way of seeing and creating photographic images.

A selection of Andrew’s published books will be available to buy (cash only) on the evening.

Norwich & District Photographic Society are delighted that Rob Whitworth has found time in his busy diary to visit us once more to present ‘Flowmotion’ - The art of the single take. Rob will show us how the single take videos are put together both in camera and in post and present a look behind the scenes of some recent projects for Planet Earth III and an Apple TV project.

Rob's signature hyperlapse technique was just the beginning - his pioneering "flow motion" style takes audiences on seamless, single-take journeys that break the boundaries of space and time. His works are instantly recognizable, with gripping perspectives that transport viewers into a world of groundbreaking visuals and transformative experiences. We are clearly in for a great evening because Rob's passion for filmmaking shines through every project he takes on. He pays attention to every detail to deliver content that connects the dots for the viewer, in a way that tell compelling stories

In addition, this will be a very flexible evening - Rob says “I’ve not got a formal talk planned. Rather show a couple of videos and talk through some of the techniques, answer some questions. Maybe buzz a little 30gram fpv drone around”.

Epping Forest is old, covers 6,000 acres, is roughly 12miles long by 2 miles wide and contains about 55,000 trees.  Although it lies close to London and attracts large numbers of people, quieter areas are still to be found.  Peter will take you on a virtual walk from an access area near Chingford and head north through the major lakes and so to the northern limits around the ancient estate of Copped Hall.  On the way the talk will identify areas of easy access and focus mainly on the bird species which may turn up at any time but will then move on to less well trodden paths to look for mammals (especially the fallow deer), sites of special interest for dragonflies and the splendour of autumn and the hosts of fungi which sprout throughout that season.

Now almost a year later to the day there is an opportunity to meet Bob face to face when he comes to Norwich to prsent something different - Namibia

“It was a 2,500 km road trip over three weeks that I did last November with my wife Peggy. We explored some of the more well know areas like Kolmanskoppe, Sausivlei and Etosha, but we also visited some less well known regions like Epupa Falls and the Caprivi Strip. I photographed a variety of things such as landscapes, wildlife, architecture and some of the different local tribes. It is an amazing country and this talk will give a great introduction to anyone who is thinking of going there”

Special Presentation - Storytelling for Photographers by JP Stones

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

JP has spent the last 5 years photographing the same group of Mexica, or Aztec, dancers. In that time, he learned how connected the Mexica are to their mythology. To stories passed down across generations. That’s when he decided that, as these stories were so vital to Mexica culture, they needed to play a bigger role in his portraits.
This is a talk is about what happened next. About how a desire to tell stories visually, ended up changing his entire creative process, and the way people react to his photos. Using examples from his cultural photography work in Mexico, JP Stones explores different ways to improve that emotional connection. Including how myths and character archetypes can be harnessed for better storytelling.
Working with narratives won’t just change the way people engage with your photos, it will fundamentally change the way you create them. Because that narrative can also be used to guide decisions on posing, composition, lighting, and colour. Focusing your creative decisions and ensuring you create cohesive work.
JP has presented for professional organizations and camera clubs across the US, Mexico, and the UK. His work has been featured on the cover of multiple publications, including Good Light Magazine. He’s been teaching his Cultural Workshops for close to 10 years.

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society (map)

Aonight’s talk covers a journey made from 10th January to 6th February 2020 just before the pandemic shut down the world. “..Three of us travelled - my wife, a friend and I. We flew into Delhi for Northern India and then flew south to Bengaluru (Bangalore) for the south before returning from Kochi (Cochin). In each area we had a car and driver to travel in..”

Part 1 - The “Golden Triangle” and Ranthambore National Park

The “Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur were the main cities of our northern journey with a detour to Ranthambore in the hope of seeing the elusive tiger. India in general and the north in particular has many World Heritage sites and we visited some of them as we moved around.

Part 2 - Karnataka and Kerala

While the north was dusty (and cold), the tropical states of India are warmer and much more lush. The two major centres on our journey were Mysore and Kochi/Cochin, but much of our time was spent in greener surroundings including the Western Ghats, the Backwaters and finishing with a few days on the beach south of Cochin.

TONIGHT’S MEETING IS ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE VIA ZOOM - The link for members of the Society will be sent out in the normal way.

Over the past two years along with others NDPS has learnt to take full advantage of technology by arranging Zoom presentations from the very best of photographers selected from both the furthest reaches of the UK and from other countries around the world. When planning the programme of Special Presentation from September 2022 high on our target list of potential future speakers was Eileen Rafferty from Montana in the United States. We are therefore delighted that Eileen has agreed to join us tonight to present her talk ‘Seeing in Black and White’.

About Eileen’s talk

Black and white photography still inspires and fascinates us today. This lecture is an exploration of the world of black and white images with an emphasis on visualizing a scene through grayscale eyes. We’ll gain inspiration from historical photographers who creatively used this medium and I will demonstrate tools to enhance your ability to see a scene through texture, line, shape and tones, leading to more intriguing black and white photographs

Creative long shutter speed camera movement and multiple exposures, Kate Barclay’s view of the Norfolk coast and beyond. In this highly-illustrated photo-talk Kate hopes to inspire us to look at the landscape in a new and creative way.
As a follow on to the presentation Kate will also run a workshop on the morning of the 2nd of October which will give members of the Society’s Landscape Group the chance to try out some of the techniques talked about during the presentation. Demand to attend the Landscape Group meeting is bound to be high so early booking is recommended

About Kate Barclay (in her own words):

I am a Norfolk based photographer and have been developing my art of landscape photography for the last 15 years.

I am originally from New Zealand where I studied to become a costume designer. By the time I was 20 I had itchy feet, I wanted to see what lay beyond the blue seas of New Zealand. After 2 years of traveling with a backpack, I landed in the UK and have been here ever since.

I worked in television in London for many years before giving it all up to move to Norfolk and become a mum to 3 boys.

I transferred my artistic talent to photography some 15 years ago using a blend of traditional and abstract techniques to develop a unique look to my images.

I have been published in many magazines over the years but more recently in Frames (digital version) ICM Photography Magazine and LEMAG (long exposure magazine)

Special Presentation - Rome, in Pictures and Words by Chris Ceaser

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society (map)

Last July landscape photographer Chris Ceaser delivered an inspirational phoo-talk about his work from the most evocative of places - Venice. Tonight award-winning lecturer on photography Chris is sure to provide another unique glimpse into both his work and his technique when this time we visit Rome.

Rome, the eternal city has an amazing story to tell. Founded in the 6th century BC it has endured times of great loss and periods of domination. Rome's history is all around the city for all to see, with perhaps the highlight being the area around the Forum, the place where it all began. The talk covers the formation of this great city, it's leaders and heroes, the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and the city as we see it today with its architecture and bridges.

As with the Venice talk, this one is accompanied by, and based on Chris's photography and there will be around 50 images on show, with Chris giving insights into how some of the images were made, what was their inspiration and what they mean to him as a photographic artist.

Tonight’s Special Presentation is the last of the 2021-2022 Spring Season of regular photo-talks - the new season of photo-talks will commmence in the Autumn on Tuesday 6th September.

Special Presentation - The Carnivores of the Serengeti by Bob Johnson

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society (map)

‘The Carnivores of the Serengeti’ is a pictorial look at the big cats and hyenas that can be found around the Ndutu and Seronera regions of Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem. The pictures were all taken during the regions dry season when the absence of the wildebeest migration makes life tough for all of the big cats especially the lions. Bob has led many photographic safaris to this region and the dry season is his favourite as the golden backgrounds perfectly complement the big cats.

Bob Johnson makes a welcome reurn to NDPS. Bob is a well-known wildlife photographer based near Epping Forest in Essex. He is best known for his work in Africa but he has also photographed the wildlife in many other countries including tigers in India and polar bears in the Arctic.

'A BIT OF A JOURNEY'

As many of my editors have remarked, “Gilly, no one has ever undertaken the journey that sees you where you sit today. Your pathway is unique. You should tell that story.”

Now I do ha ha! The first part of the talk outlines the circumstances I found myself in both photographically and television wise for over 35 years. The second half looks at my landscapes and how I undertake them. .This talk is one in a series of four that Mark delivers.
