Members' Evening - Fishermen & Kings - The forgotten photographs of Olive Edis

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society The Interactive Studio, City Academy Norwich 299 Bluebell Road, Norwich, NR4 7LP United Kingdom (map)

An evening celebrating the historic legacy of Sheringham photographer Olive Edis including a screening of a film in which portrait photographer Rankin explores Olive's pioneering work and seeks to discover why the pioneering photographer lacks the recognition she deserves, despite being heavily involved in the development of photography.

Mary Olive Edis, later Edis-Galsworthy (3 September 1876 – 28 December 1955), was a British photographer and successful businesswoman who, throughout her career, owned several studios in London and East Anglia.

Edis's first studio on Church Street, Sheringham, was purpose built for the Edis sisters by their uncle the architect Robert William Edis. It had a glass roof to allow in natural daylight which became an important aspect of her trademark style.

Edis's sitters ranged from royalty to politicians, to influential women, and local Norfolk fisherfolk. She was one of the first women to adopt the autochrome process professionally and became Britain's first official female war photographer in 1919.

John Rankin Waddell (born 1966), known as Rankin, is a British photographer and director who has photographed, amongst other subjects, Björk, Kate Moss, Madonna, David Bowie and Queen Elizabeth II. The London Evening Standard described Rankin's fashion and portrait photography style as "high-gloss, highly sexed and hyper-perfect".

Rankin has directed music videos, documentaries, a feature film, short films and commercials.
