65 Minutes in Mumbai's Dhobi Ghat - Michael Chinnici

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society Norwich United Kingdom (map)

ZOOM SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Renowned American photographer Michael Chinnici takes you into one of Mumbai's most fascinating experiences, the Dhobi Ghat. This open-air laundry is a miniature city, within a slum, where over 7,000 live and work. Given only one hour of access, he chooses to take only one camera, one prime lens, and shoot the entire collection in black and white. See the stunning results of his brief encounter. You will be truly amazed...!

This carousel of images that illustrate Michael’s talk are being shown with his permission.

About the photographer in his own words...

Michael Chinnici is a New York-based documentary photographer, creative director, designer, and author. He has travelled the world photographing people, street, architecture, landscapes, motorsports, aerial, and fashion. He enjoys the challenges that various photographic disciplines present. Michael is the Founder and CEO of Photo Workshop Adventures, a premier photo tour company offering over 150 photo-centric cultural adventures in over 50 countries. He loves sharing his photography experiences and is a frequent speaker at events where he discusses his “Evoking Emotion” and “The Art of Seeing” approaches to photography.

Michael is the author of the beautifully curated, large-format photo storytelling book titled Vanishing Cuba. This limited edition 348 page book includes a stunning collection of over 300 photographs and stories from Michael’s 24 trips to Cuba. The collection depicts the changes Cuba is facing as it emerges from more than 60 years of isolation and decay. Michael’s trips to Cuba have yielded tens of thousands of photographs, thought-provoking and emotional stories, and created lifelong friendships. Vanishing Cuba is about capturing the ‘Soul of Cuba’, and Michael’s love affair with Cuba and the Cuban people comes through in this compelling and beautifully produced book, handcrafted in Italy.

The book is available in a “Silver Edition,” “Deluxe Edition,” and the collector series “Reserve Edition”—limited to just 300 copies. Click here for more information.

Currently, Michael is pursuing several ongoing personal projects, including a Vanishing India photo book to be produced in 2023.

Michael was introduced to photography by his father at the tender age of 11. Using his dad’s WWII-era Argus C3 and a basement darkroom, he began his lifelong love affair with photography. Although Michael spent the early years of his career in marketing and design (heading up his own New York City Ad Agency), he founded New York’s first digital photography studio “Icon Digital” in 1995. He is the father of two girls and two boys, one of whom is a cinematographer.

When Michael isn’t on assignment, in the studio, or on a global adventure, he can be found travelling the world searching for unique photo opportunities, exceptional hotels, and amazing restaurants.

About NDPS Special Presentations

Every month at Norwich and District Photographic Society there is the opportunity to hear inspirational photographic talks by photographers who are recognised to be at the top of their game and renowned specialists in their field of photography. The quality and range of subjects included in these Special Presentations are we believe unequalled both here in Norfolk and much further afield. Further, arguably alone they more than justify the cost of becoming a member of the Society.

The programme for the 2021-2022 Season is well advanced and has been designed to offer a broad range of excellent speakers who will cover, as in past seasons, a far reaching range of photographic genre. Whilst there remains some uncertainty regarding how quickly we shall return to the new normality after covid we will continue to take a flexible approach and only announce the final details about a month before each presentation.

Members of the Society are normally able to attend Special Presentations free of charge. However, NON-MEMBERS wanting to attend a Special Presentation can usually purchase a guest ticket prior to the event. Guest tickets (subject to availability) must be purchased in advance and are only available from our ticketing partner Eventbrite.co.uk.

Please note the ticket office for each individual presentation is not open until approximately ONE month prior to the date of the presentation when all arrangements for the evening have been agreed and confirmed between the presenter and the Society.

ONLINE PRESENTATIONS

During the coronavirus pandemic the Society put together a revised programme of Special Presentations that were presented online.  These online events proved to be very successful, with good attendance and we thank all our speakers and members who have adapted to this medium. Post-covid we envisage that we shall continue to make full use of the available technologies to deliver our Special Presentations. In the past year online presenttions has widened our reach and we have hosted speakers from the furthest points in the UK, throughout Europe and much wider afield from Australia and the United States.

We don’t intend to allow geography to be a reason for not heaing from the very best photographers worldwide in future seasons. Equally, we shall evolve to ensure this is achieved in the most effective way for our members
