Special Presentation - An Indian Adventure by Alan Cameron ARPS

  • Norwich & District Photographic Society Norwich (online via ZOOM) United Kingdom (map)

Tonight’s talk covers a journey made from 10th January to 6th February 2020 just before the pandemic shut down the world. “..Three of us travelled - my wife, a friend and I. We flew into Delhi for Northern India and then flew south to Bengaluru (Bangalore) for the south before returning from Kochi (Cochin). In each area we had a car and driver to travel in..”

Part 1 - The “Golden Triangle” and Ranthambore National Park

The “Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur were the main cities of our northern journey with a detour to Ranthambore in the hope of seeing the elusive tiger. India in general and the north in particular has many World Heritage sites and we visited some of them as we moved around.

Part 2 - Karnataka and Kerala

While the north was dusty (and cold), the tropical states of India are warmer and much more lush. The two major centres on our journey were Mysore and Kochi/Cochin, but much of our time was spent in greener surroundings including the Western Ghats, the Backwaters and finishing with a few days on the beach south of Cochin.

TONIGHT’S MEETING IS ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE VIA ZOOM - The link for members of the Society will be sent out in the normal way.

About Alan Cameron ARPS

In 1969 when I was 17 my father gave me a camera - a Zeiss Ikon Contina with a 45mm f2.8 - f22 lens. Everything had to be manually set, aperture, shutter speed and distance. It had no meter and no rangefinder and the shutter speed ranged from 1s to 1/300s. I was hooked.

At university I acquired a Praktica L SLR with a wonderful 50mm f1.8 Zeiss Pancolor lens. During my PhD years I learned darkroom methods in order to print images taken using photographic plates in an electron microscope.

In 1978 we moved to Nigeria and I bought a Canon AE-1 and 50mm lens. I now use a Canon EOS-R with a EOS M5 as backup. It is amazing that I've moved from using ISO 25 Kodachrome to get acceptable results to a point where the EOS-R will produce excellent images at ISO12800. The best way to describe me is as a magpie photographer. Much of my photography is done within a day's journey of home, and I adore travel too. Going around the world for work or pleasure has led to so many opportunities to capture places, people, cites, landscapes, seascapes and wildlife in all its forms.

Over the years I've been active in camera clubs both in the Midlands where we lived for many years and then in the Blackpool area where we live now. I have been Chair of three clubs locally and for a number of years I've been a member of Poulton-le-Fylde Photographic Society where I’m still chair.

I joined the Royal Photographic Society in the 2001, achieved my LRPS in the 2000s and, finally, my ARPS in Documentary Photography in March this year.

About NDPS Special Presentations

Every month at Norwich and District Photographic Society there is the opportunity to hear inspirational photographic talks by photographers who are recognised to be at the top of their game and renowned specialists in their field of photography. The quality and range of subjects included in these Special Presentations are we believe unequalled both here in Norfolk and much further afield. Further, arguably alone they more than justify the cost of becoming a member of the Society.

The annual programme for the 2021-2022 Season that begins in September and runs through to the end of June 2023 is well advanced and has been designed to offer a broad range of excellent speakers who will cover, as in past seasons, a far reaching range of photographic genre.

Members of the Society are normally able to attend Special Presentations free of charge. However, NON-MEMBERS wanting to attend a Special Presentation can usually purchase a guest ticket prior to the event. Guest tickets (subject to availability) must be purchased in advance and are only available from our ticketing partner Eventbrite.co.uk.
Please note the ticket office for each individual presentation is not open until approximately ONE month prior to the date of the presentation when all arrangements for the evening have been agreed and confirmed between the presenter and the Society.

ABOUT ONLINE PRESENTATIONS

During the coronavirus pandemic the Society put together a revised programme of Special Presentations that were presented online.  These online events proved to be very successful, with good attendance and we thank all our speakers and members who have adapted to this medium. Post-covid we envisage that we shall continue to make full use of the available technologies to deliver our Special Presentations. In the past year online presenttions has widened our reach and we have hosted speakers from the furthest points in the UK, throughout Europe and much wider afield from Australia and the United States.

We don’t intend to allow geography to be a reason for not heaing from the very best photographers worldwide in future seasons. Equally, we shall evolve to ensure this is achieved in the most effective way for our members
