Julian Claxton is an award-winning photographer who, in 2012 went on the journey of a lifetime cycling, 6000 miles from Suffolk to Rwanda.
During this life changing journey he discovered a corner of Uganda that inspired him to setup a project for street and rural children in the region, Empowering them to form choices, to form interesting, emotional and moving pictorial versions of their life. A while later Give a Child a Camera was formed.

Setup in 2015, Give a Child a Camera empowers young Ugandan children to tell a story of their life through photography.
Providing an extra curricular activity, the project delivers on its mission statement to provide an uplifting, interesting, fun and educational programme
Designed to build confidence & independence, the activities allow the young people to express their feelings, adding to their knowledge and providing the potential to move towards a career in photography.

About Julian:
In 2015 Julian won the Travel Media Awards “photographer of the year” for his image ‘Prayer in Uganda’, also becoming one of the short listed entries for the Sony World Photography Awards a year later.
In 2016 & 2017 he won the Event Photography Awards, for his behind the scenes imagery of a UK political party during elections.
Lately Julian has adapted his photography to become more of a visual storyteller, working with national charities and organisations showcasing their work through still and moving imagery.
A recent series of black and white portraiture documents the response of a national charity during the Covid-19 pandemic in central London, which has recently been exhibited at the Samsung KX gallery in Kings Cross.
Commercially, Julian now works in the renewable industry, shooting still and moving imagery for a diverse range of international clients.

Here are some further examples of Julian’s work - three by Julian and the remainder more importantly by children who are participants on the project.:
