MAKING SENSE OF THE LANDSCAPE - THE ART OF SEEING
A highly illustrated photo-talk by Eddie Hyde FRPS

This talk is my attempt to articulate how I go about the relentless pursuit of images that, at the very least record moments in the landscape and at best can be regarded as art worth framing and displaying on a wall. What is it that can take landscape images to a level beyond a good record and be looked upon as a work of art. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing someone say that your image looks like a painting or query whether it’s actually a photograph. This talk aims to describe how and when this has happened for me.

ABOUT EDDIE HYDE
Photography has captivated me since I was a small boy with a Kodak Brownie 127. I cannot claim to have any images from that period of any worth but by the time I was at University studying Chemistry the skills I was acquiring translated well to the darkroom. I do have one or 2 images from this time that I can look back on with satisfaction. I have explored a wide variety of photographic genres and styles over the years and this broad appreciation helps me as a Judge with the Surrey Photographic Association.
I enjoy most genres of photography, but I tend to major in landscape and I never feel more alive than when I am outdoors, anticipating the moment when the magic might happen: the light, weather and landscape combine to create art in front of your eyes and you are there to capture it.
I have had images commended in the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition 2 years in a row, the International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, The Siena International Photography Awards, The Travel Photographer of the Year, British Photography Awards, The Epson Pano Awards and the International Garden Photographer of the Year. I am a major contributor of images to the National Trust properties locally.
And last but not least, I am a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

ABOUT NDPS SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Every month at Norwich and District Photographic Society there is the opportunity to hear inspirational photographic talks by photographers who are recognised to be at the top of their game and renowned specialists in their field of photography. The quality and range of subjects included in these Special Presentations are we believe unequalled both here in Norfolk and much further afield. Further, arguably alone they more than justify the cost of becoming a member of the Society.

The programme for the 2021-2022 Season is well advanced and has been designed to offer a broad range of excellent speakers who will cover, as in past seasons, a far reaching range of photographic genre. Whilst there remains some uncertainty regarding how quickly we shall return to the new normality after covid we will continue to take a flexible approach and only announce the final details about a month before each presentation.

Members of the Society are normally able to attend Special Presentations free of charge. However, NON-MEMBERS wanting to attend a Special Presentation can usually purchase a guest ticket prior to the event. Guest tickets (subject to availability) must be purchased in advance and are only available from our ticketing partner Eventbrite.co.uk.
Please note the ticket office for each individual presentation is not open until approximately ONE month prior to the date of the presentation when all arrangements for the evening have been agreed and confirmed between the presenter and the Society.

ABOUT ONLINE PRESENTATIONS
During the coronavirus pandemic the Society put together a revised programme of Special Presentations that were presented online.  These online events proved to be very successful, with good attendance and we thank all our speakers and members who have adapted to this medium. Post-covid we envisage that we shall continue to make full use of the available technologies to deliver our Special Presentations. In the past year online presenttions has widened our reach and we have hosted speakers from the furthest points in the UK, throughout Europe and much wider afield from Australia and the United States.

We don’t intend to allow geography to be a reason for not heaing from the very best photographers worldwide in future seasons. Equally, we shall evolve to ensure this is achieved in the most effective way for our members
