Chairman's monthly blog...

A good month for the Society during October in terms of quality of the Tuesday night presentations, Good attendance and a group of new members signing up.

Anticipating a larger than normal turnout for our ’Special Presentations this month it was decided by the committee to use the upstairs hall at Chapelfield. This has proven to be a correct decision and we will continue to use the larger space when neccessary.

The month began with a ‘Special Presentation’ and return visit from Kevin Sawford giving us ’Wildlife Projects throughout the Year’. Plenty of advice and tips for those interested in wildlife photography and an enormouse number of great images throughout the evening.

World class sports photographer Mark Pain also gave his ‘Special Presentation’ to a packed audience with some superb images from many major sporting events throughout the world including the Olympics, Premier League Football, Ryder Cup, Football and Rugby World Cups and World Championship Athletics.

Mark was named the British Airways ‘Photographer of the Year’ at the prestigious UK Guild of Picture Editors Awards in 2012.

This was truly an inspirational evening of super photography with plenty of insider information about how he captures his amazing images. A standout night to remember for a long time to come.

On the 22nd October Round Two of the Society’s ‘Photographer of the Year’ Competition took place and apart from a good attendance a record number of prints were submitted. The theme of the  Second Round was ‘The World in Black and White’.

A couple of season’s ago because submissions to this competitiuon was declining…particularly print rounds…it was decided to increase submissions from two to three per member in order to have enough images to fill an evening. It now looks like we might need to return to two submissions or we will not have sufficient time to judge them all.

Many thanks to Neil Hall (Vice Chairman) who has run a series of Photoshop sessions for beginners in the superb facilities at the University of East Anglia and which concluded last month. I believe Neil will run further sessions in the New Year if there is sufficient demand.

Excelant timing that the conclusion of Neil’s Photoshop sessions ended around the same time as the ‘Special Presentation’  from Ian Wilson’s ‘Post Processing in Photoshop’. What an amazing evening coving such things as Luminosity Masks and Smart Objects. I am of the opinion that we should try and get Ian back sometime to do a Saturday all day workshop. I am convinced this would prove to be of great interest to not only members of NDPS but other clubs and interested parties throughout the area.

Also a quick mention of the successful studio shoot at Butterfly Studios I am told as I was unable to attend on this occasion. Anyone who would like to have a go at studio photography should come along to the next studio session (the Studio Group meets once a month) where you will find plenty of help to get you on your way.

Mention also to a very pleasant tour with Tom at the Fakenham Racecourse. Many thanks Tom.

Finally for this month a mention of the ‘Landscape Group’ shoot at Brancaster which had a good turnout from our members but not a very good turnout in terms of the weather. Still good to get out and about so very early in the morning in the cold though and a lovely breakfast at the local cafe.

In addition to the normal activities Della Garnham NDPS Treasurer has been awarded the ‘Centenary Award’ by previous holder of the award Brian Ebbage FRPS for Services to the Society’. Well done Della and many thanks for everything you do to help keep the Society running smoothly.
